PLANTING THE GARDEN
*********************
Spring is here, winter's chill is beginning to ebb, and you're eager
to get those seeds in the ground. Visions of plump juicy vegetables
have been dancing in your head all winter, now it's time to do some-
thing about it!
The seeds you ordered have arrived and you have the urge to plant
them all at once. But wait, they can't all go in at the same time.
Check your records to find out the planting dates of each vegetable.
Sort the seed packages according to planting seasons, early, mid,
and late planting. A small shoe box with cardboard dividers is
useful in keeping packages sorted.
If you have ordered plants, keep the roots dormant by keeping them in
the dark by wrapping them in black plastic, tied with a string. The
tops, if green and alive, need to have light. Place the bundles of
plastic prepared plants in empty cottage cheese containers until
their particular planting date arrives. The roots must be kept
moist, but not dripping.
Check the planting categories, usually plants can't go in before
February, unless you live in a subtropical area. The fertilizer and
mulch spread on the garden area have been breaking down for at least
three months. That is long enough for the worms to come to the first
2 inches of soil and those 2 inches to start getting "soft". The
weeds left on the surface have since deteriorated and the bacteria
have begun their role in the life cycle to make ready available
nutrients for the vegetables.
To start planting your garden, all that is needed is to use the hoe
to pull back the mulch to get to the soil. Make a straight line
with the hoe as you would with soil. Next hoe a straight furrow,
three inches wide, in the soil. Here is the secret of ORGANIC
INTENSIVE GARDENING. Choose plants from the same category, (ie.,
early, mid, late), check the COMPANION PLANTING GUIDE in the
REGISTERED VERSION and plant the ones which need to be planted deeper
first. Cover these with half the soil recommended. Next plant the
companion vegetables, cover them with the recommended depth of soil.
In this way, usually three different varieties of vegetable may be
planted in one row.
Leave the mulch pulled back until the plants grow to a size where
their leaves can easily reach for the sky past the mulch.
Now your garden is planted, very little effort is needed on your
part, you may need to add more mulch during the growing season, as
it is composed. Keep the mulch 4-6 inches deep, nature does the
rest.
It is usually a good idea to start using the rotenone/pyrethrum
mixture early and reapply after every rain.
The next chapter covers a list of plants which grow best with other
plants. Companion gardening is the best way to prevent insect
attack. To view the next chapter, return to the Main Menu and
choose, COMPANION PLANTING GUIDE.
